The enormity of the Holocaust as a historical event makes great demands on historians. For and American Jewish historian the demands rise to the level of pain.
Those American Jews who persevered against the obstacles to rescue of their brothers deserve the mantle of heroism; those, like Stephen Wise Sam Rosenman, and who persistently and aggressively used energies that could have been used for rescue to instead undermine the efforts of those so engaged warrant the mantle of antiheroes.
